Frank Mazzuca Sponsored by PhotoSensitive

photo

Frank Mazzuca has loved photography for as long as he can remember. Over those five decades, his camera of choice has changed from his first, a 620 that his father bought for a dollar in a gift store in Niagara Falls, to his current one, a Canon 5D. In between, cameras included a Kodak Instamatic, a Minolta XGM and Hasselblad 50th anniversary 500CM, among many others.

Although Frank was obsessed with photography at a young age and took photography courses at high school, he chose not to study it at university. "I taught myself photography," he says. "I was always taking pictures, so that's how I learned, from trying different things. Frank studied design at Seneca College and started working at a design studio where he was the go-to man whenever photos were required. "I found that photography made for a beautiful marriage with my design work," he says.

After working for design studios for 14 years, Frank set up his own business, called Mazzuca Design, Photography & Ideas Inc., which he has run with his wife for over 15 years. "

Frank was first introduced to PhotoSensitive after getting to know V. Tony Hauser, one of PhotoSensitive's original members. They had met at a one-day seminar that Tony was conducting at Humber College on portrait photography. Frank showed Tony his portfolio and they became good friends.

Through Tony, Frank met PhotoSensitive co-founder, Andrew Stawicki and Andrew invited Frank to work on what would be his first PhotoSensitive assignment - Destination Toronto - back in 2004. Frank has been a regular contributor to PhotoSensitive projects ever since.

"PhotoSensitive does an important job," says Frank. "I am blessed and honoured to be a part of this team. Andrew and Peter Robertson have put together a great group of like-minded people to tell the stories through the lens."

For Frank, what sets PhotoSensitive assignments apart from his other work is the amount of time that he can spend on them. "Take my assignment for the Energy Project, at the Arva Flour Mills," Frank says. "Long before I went out there, I spoke to them on the phone several times, told them about PhotoSensitive and the project, we emailed back and forth. When I finally met them it was like we'd known each other for years and they were really comfortable with the whole process. And I got to spend a whole day with them. You don't get to do that with your normal work, there just isn't time."

V. Tony Hauser Sponsored by PhotoSensitive

photo

Hauser has always been committed to the creation of outstanding archival black-and-white photographs, both in silver and platinum metals. His photographs are included in permanent collections of the National Archives of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography and numerous collections around the world. Hauser's photographs have been exhibited at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, The Banff Centre, The Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, at Canada House in London, England, The Hamburg State Opera in Germany, and at the National Museum of Culture in Quito, Ecuador to name just a few. Hauser is a passionate anti-landmines activist. He has spoken against landmines in universities across Canada, as well as in Slovenia, England and Spain. His exhibition entitled Living with Land Mines features portraits of Cambodian children who have survived a land mine accident.

PhotoSensitive's Vision

For more than 20 years, PhotoSensitive's goal has been to bring together the talent of their group and harness the power of the camera to achieve social goals, and spur people into action. That desire has been achieved many times over in PhotoSensitive's journey, with the help of every contributing photographer and many people and organizations who believe in the work.

By working exclusively in black and white, the photographers have created images that allow viewers to concentrate on the image rather than be distracted by colour. Each photographer brings his or her vision to a subject; the sum of these visions is what provides a compelling social comment.

The Energy Project

PhotoSensitive, in partnership with the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA), has been working on The Energy Project, a major new photographic exhibition. The Energy Project covers every facet of energy - its production, distribution and consumption as well as aspects of our daily lives that are directly affected by energy.

Be sure to see a sneak peak of the Energy Project here at the Show, before it officially launches in Toronto in November.
